Henry was a first cousin of Union Major General George B. McClellan, who twice commanded the Army of the Potomac.〔〔 After studying for the ministry at Williams College, from which he graduated in 1858 aged 17, McClellan moved to Stony Point Mills in Cumberland County, Virginia where he became a schoolteacher.〔〔 Henry McClellan married Catherine Macon Matthews of Cumberland County, Virginia on December 12, 1863.〔Trout, 1993, p. 203.〕 They had nine children, although only five survived Henry.〔
